The Need for Water Filters and Water Filtration Systems

Water filtration has a long history and is in fact, as old as the history of man's need and use for clean water.  This need became especially apparent when human communities moved in together and water sources became contaminated.  Because water is such a vital component of life, the need to produce water that is clean and safe became apparent.  It was only a matter of time before water filters were born.

Is there such thing as pure water?

The good and bad thing about water is that it is considered as the universal solvent.  Therefore, it is capable of dissolving materials.  Natural water, such as those found in lakes, ponds, streams and rivers, contain many contaminants, some of which may be good for health – such as salts and minerals – and some that are very harmful, such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, heavy metals, radioactive matter and some organic chemicals.  Since the human body has no natural filtration method that can discern bad contaminants from good ones, water filtration is essential.

What is water filtration?

Water filtration, put simply, is the method of using a device or appliance that can help to physically remove harmful contaminants from water.  Water filtration, unlike other forms of water purification, will not alter the chemical make-up of matter in the water.  It will simply separate small, solid matter from the water itself.

The very first water filters were crude makeshift devices made with cloth, which, when placed at the water source, could act as a fine sieve to separate contaminants from the liquid itself.  They have since evolved into more efficient methods using a variety of materials and techniques.

How water filters work

The process of water filtration requires the use of a filter medium which blocks the passage of harmful matter and contaminants.  Depending on the type of water filter used, filtration may involve plain physical obstruction of contaminants or it may also involve a chemical process.

The materials used for the filter medium vary, although the most commonly used these days are filters made with carbon materials.  The filters are made in such a way that water passage is slowed down as they go through the media.  The presence of carbon in the filter helps block more contaminants and can even bring about the process of adsorption.  This breaks down the bond between water and contaminants and encourages the contaminants to stick to the filter instead, leaving the water pure and safe to drink.

The ideal water filtration method is for water to go through several filtration stages, each one with a filter medium with holes that gradually grow tinier, ensuring that even minute contaminants will not pass through and be poured into a drinking glass.

Advantages of water filtration

Advocates of water filters say that filters are better at blocking and removing more contaminants than other methods of water purification.  Since water filters encourage adsorption, they do not remove trace minerals that are essential for the body's health.

Water filtration is also very effective in removing cryptosporidium and protozoa giardia, two of the most dreaded organisms that have caused gastrointestinal diseases and epidemics in the past.  Water filters can also remove chlorine, its byproducts and VOCs or volatile organic compounds.  These are considered as the most health-threatening contaminants present in drinking water.

On top of it all, water filtration is also the least expensive of all purification methods and does not require the use of extra sources of energy as distillation or reverse osmosis does.  Water filtration also does not waste a lot of water in the process of water purification.

Disadvantages of water filtration

Water filters are not created equal and while chemical adsorption is a feature in many water filters, not every unit has this capability.  As such, some granular filters may not be able to block certain contaminants from passing through the media.  There may also be water filters that allow rapid passage of water and not enough contact time with the media.  This reduces the number of contaminants that are removed.

The disadvantages, however, are easily remedied.  By adding extra devices such as a carbon block to the water filtration system, the contaminants that escape the filtration process may be stopped.

The need to filter water

It is extremely difficult to determine whether water is safe to drink or not just by observing its physical qualities.  Sometimes, even discolored or cloudy water may not be harmful to health and clear water may contain odorless, colorless and tasteless contaminants that can lead to diseases.  To make sure none of these contaminants cause harm, water filtration systems should be utilized.

Water is More Important Than we Think or Why We Need a Water Filter

Water is really so much more than we think it is.  Our bodies are made of at least 75% water.  The water in our bodies does not naturally have the toxic chemicals that are tap water has in it.  If you use an R.O water filter or distilled water filtration, then you are removing all the natural minerals in the water.  This is NOT the kind of water that is in your body either.

So what’s the solution.  As far as I can see we have 3 solutions.  We can drink Fiji Water that is the only water I am aware of that is in it’s natural state.  Other bottled waters are questionable.  I don’t take a chance with these anymore.  Of course, if you need to drink water, any water is better than none, unless it is so polluted that it will make you sick.

The second solution is to move to where there is natural spring water that has not yet be polluted by the chemicals found in so many of our water sources.

The third solution is to buy a water filter that takes out the bad stuff and leaves in the natural minerals.  To my knowledge the only truly inexpensive water filter is the Aquasana.  This is why I share about it on this blog.  You won’t find anything on this blog that I myself don’t do,use or have personal experience with.

Oh, well, there is a fourth solution.  Do nothing.  Save the $99 for the Aquasana, and keep spending MORE money on your bottled water which is too often no better than tap water.  Or just drink your tap water, and consume the chlorine and other chemicals in your water.

If you don’t understand how important this you might want to check some of the posts on my blog, or you can go to this page where I have listed 3 different Aquasana distributors, that besides having their water filters on sale, also have a lot of good educational resources for you.  One of them actually has a whole house water filter 50% in April.  I just bought one.  And I also bought an Aquasana under the counter to replace my $450 R.O. System.

Good Water is The Foundation for Good Health

Good Water is the Foundation to Good Health

Most of us don’t realize that the quality and quantity of the water we drink really does have an impact on our health. All life giving and healing processes that happen inside our bodies can not happen without healthy water.  (Either pure spring or mountain water, or water from a good water filter.  Not bottled water, unless you are sure you know what is in it.)

The truth is that the human body is like a water machine which primarily runs on water and minerals and life force. Medical science has recently focused more on the tremendous healing ability our body has and they have finally caught with what folks in the alternative health community have know that the healthy ability depends on water.

Our human bodies are made up of over 70% water. Our blood is more than 80% water‚ our brains … over 75% water‚ and the human liver amazingly enough is 96% water!

Water’s purity is probably the most basic and critical key to healthy longevity, since the major role that it plays in the function of our brain and nervous system‚ proper digestion and nutrient absorption all depend on a healthy amount of water intake. Without enough good water, our body can not get the nutritional value from our foods and supplements…

Most people are not away how greatly our energy level is affected by the amount of water we consume.  Modern medicine has proven that just a 5% drop in body fluids will cause a 25% to 30% loss of energy in an average person and a 15% drop in body fluids could cause death!

Our liver uses water to metabolize fat into useable energy. An increased intake of healthy water helps metabolize and shed stored fat. Much of the energy lost suffered by  80% of our population is due to minor dehydration

Undoubtedly, the single most important component to long-term health is detoxification. A detox that relies almost exclusively on an appropriate intake of good healthy water.   Our body‘s only means of flushing out toxins is water.  In this industrialized society‚ we are exposed to literally hundreds of harmful chemicals daily.  It is well know that the air‚ the foods we eat and much of what we touch can contain traces of harmful chemicals.

In reality it’s impossible to keep toxins from getting into our body.  However, we assist our body in ridding itself of these toxins drinking plenty of healthy water.  So many degenerative diseases are the result of toxins building up in the body.

So it makes sense, good sense, for us to drink sufficient good water to allow our body to purify itself. What’s probably obvious is that the quality of the water we drink is equally if not more important then the amount. If the water you are drinking already contains chlorine and other chemicals‚ it will have less of an ability to carry toxins out of the body.

We are forcing our liver and kidneys to be a filter, when we consume water that contains traces of synthetic chemicals.  This will ultimately damage two of our most vital organs. By consuming an abundant intake of clean‚ healthy water we will allow our bodies to perform all the healing processes that is was created to do.

8 Reasons to Use a Water Filter

If you think you don't need  a water filter think again.

1.    If you don't have a clean source of water, you won't be able to capitalize on the health benefits of water.

2.    It has been obvious for years contaminated and impure water is probably leading cause of epidemic disease in developing countries.

3.    About 2,000 drinking water contaminants maybe be present in your tap water, not  the lease of  which are several known poisons.

4.    The presence of toxins in your drinking water may be the main contributor to several types of cancer.  (Keeping in mind the person's immune system health)

5.    A child's healthy mental and physical development must be assisted by clean, healthy drinking water.  This is essential.

6.    Bottled water is not the viable alternative you have been lead to believe.

7.    Utilizing a point-of-use filtration system is probably the only way to ensure pure, contaminant-free drinking water.

8.    The EPA has found that  lead in drinking water contributes to about 480,000 cases of learning disorders in children  yearly in the United States alone.

We All Need a Reminder about Good Water & the Right Kind of Water Filter

I really didn't think that I needed to hear all of this myself.  About drinking water and using the right kind of water filter.  After all I have been the water guru of a lot of my friends and family   I have heard that sometimes we wind up teaching what we need to learn the most ourselves.  That is really the case here.  So…although this sounds like I am on rant about water and water filters, and like I am sort of preaching this stuff, remember it's mostly for myself I am writing this.

If you haven't read my blog post

You Need to Drink Water SO… You Need a Water Filter!

then you might want to.  There I mention the Aquasana filter, but this was before I read this really excellent and must read webpage on the  Aquasana Water Filter website

Here are few quotes just to wet your appetite:

While it is permitted and accepted that bottled water and tap water commonly contain traces of many unhealthy contaminants, Aquasana was designed to produce truly healthy, chemical free water.

Ok, did you know this?  I didn't and if I heard before I didn't remember it.  I remember reading that Fiji Water was really one of the few bottle waters that was safe to drink.  Wonder why I have kept drinking the bottled waters that are not Fiji?

Ok, here is another quote:

We believe that the healthiest water is water like it existed before the influences of modern man, water free from chemical contaminants and balanced with traces of the Earth's natural minerals. Aquasana systems remove chlorine, synthetic chemicals, heavy metals, turbidity and cysts while leaving in the natural mineral traces.

Ok, here we go again another lesson for your WaterBlogger and you too if you want to listen up.  Why did I continue drinking R.O. water alone after I knew that was not the thing to do?  Of course, I don't anymore.  I add celtic sea salt now, but soon I will own my under the counter Aquasana.  If I didn't have the investment in my R.O.  I would get the inexpensive countertop Aquasana right now.

I first heard about the Aquasana from a friend who had one.  Recently I remembered!  I plan to buy a Pelican Whole House filter soon and will see which drinking water filtration system will be the best.
